(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - A British Islamic organisation has called on British Muslims to support the recent popular movements in the Middle East and North Africa.
Catherine Heseltine, the spokeswoman of the Muslim Public Affairs Committee said democratic movements in Arab countries are “inspirational” for Muslims the world over including in Britain.
“We fully support the democratic struggles of people across the Middle East to gain freedom from the oppressive regimes that have denied them their basic human rights,” she said.
She added that the courage of those who “willingly risk their lives” for this cause is “inspirational”.
Heseltine said British Muslims should support the Middle East democratic struggles by “using the freedoms we enjoy to campaign for an ethical foreign policy”.
Referring to the invasion of Saudi forces to Bahrain to suppress peaceful protests, she said “this is a worrying state of affairs” for Muslims.
Heseltine suggested that the Saudi regime’s main issue in occupying Bahrain is that about 70 per cent of its population are Shiites.
“…If you look at Iran, it is one of the few countries that has the guts to stand up and speak up against Zionism and the Shiites are actually doing far more to participate against the Zionist regime, compared to their Sunni counterparts.”
More than one thousand Saudi troops were sent to Bahrain last week. This raised the outcry of the Bahraini people and other Muslims in the region.
For weeks, Bahraini people have been struggling for democracy to topple the monarchical regime in their country.
